History

The Bulkley Valley Community Cancer Care Team (CCCT), formed in the mid-1990s, to improve cancer care for local cancer patients and their families. Initially, the focus was on public education and raising awareness about forms of cancer and preventative measures.

At the same time, the team worked with BC Cancer, to gain support for a local cancer care service in Smithers.

The Smithers Cancer Service opened its doors in December of 2001 and has grown from a one-nurse clinic to a service staffed by three BC Cancer certified nurses and general practitioners with oncology training.

This left the Community Cancer Care Team free to focus on other priorities – financial assistance for cancer patients and their families required to travel for diagnosis and/or treatment.

In the past 10 years the CCCT has provided more than $100,000 to over 100 Bulkley Valley cancer patients and their families.
